Welcome to ReadMatter, a locally owned and operated bookstore located in Johannesburg. We started off selling books on the community Whatsapp group in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, determined to provide our community with a safe and welcoming space to discover new books and connect with others who love to read.
From Humble Beginnings
As Covid-19 progressed we moved over to Facebook Marketplace, and for most of 2020, we operated solely as an online store on Facebook Marketplace. Despite the challenges of starting a business during a pandemic, the store quickly gained a loyal customer base thanks to a wide selection of quality used books and exceptional customer service.
In 2021, Readmatter joined the popular South African online marketplace, Bidorbuy, allowing the store to reach an even wider audience. The move proved to be a successful one, as the store continued to grow and expand its customer base, servicing customers throughout South Africa.
In 2022, Readmatter took the next step in its evolution by creating its own website. This allowed the store to have a more professional online presence and gave customers the ability to easily browse and purchase books directly from the website.
With our own website, we are constantly adding new features and functionality to make it easier and more enjoyable for customers to browse and purchase books online.

Each week, we ship hundreds of books to customers all over South Africa, making it easy for book lovers to discover new titles and add them to their reading lists. Our team takes pride in their ability to efficiently process and ship orders, ensuring that customers receive their books in a timely manner. We use high-quality packaging materials to ensure that the books arrive in perfect condition, every time.
In addition to offering a wide range of new and used books in our own store, we have teamed up with various other booksellers to source the books you want at the quality you expect and the prices you deserve. We can have over 5000 books available on our website and another 50 000 books at our fingertips that we can source in a heartbeat.
Giving Back
Since opening our doors in 2020, we have been committed to supporting a variety of causes, including underprivileged schools, animal rescues, old age homes and NGO’s. We believe that it is important to give back to our community and are proud to make regular donations to these organizations. A percentage of every book we sell gets given back to the community.
